Just The Two Of You: A Guide to Your Couple Portraits

As a wedding photographer, one of the most rewarding parts of the day for me, and often for my couples, is the dedicated time set aside for couple portraits. It’s a brief but meaningful pause in a whirlwind day, and I always make it a priority to ensure it’s as relaxed, enjoyable, and beautiful as possible. So here’s a little insight into how I approach this section of your wedding day.

Scouting Locations in Advance

Long before your big day arrives, I’ll have scouted the venue and surrounding areas for the best portrait locations.

Whether it’s a secluded woodland path, a dramatic shoreline, or simply a quiet garden corner with beautiful light, I look for spots that will give your photos character and intimacy.

I will also take note of any potential issues (for example, muddy ground) and check in with you beforehand to make sure you’re comfortable with any ‘off-road’ aspects of the plan. That way, if there’s anything we need to prepare for (like bringing a sturdier pair of shoes to change into temporarily), we know we’re covered.

Taking You Away for a Breather

Once your wedding ceremony is over and you’ve had a chance to greet your guests, I’ll quietly whisk you both away for about 30 minutes. This isn't just about getting amazing photos – this is also your time to take a breath and soak in the fact that you’re married!

I make this part of the day feel as natural and unintrusive as possible. Often, it’s the first chance you get to be alone together, and I want you to enjoy that. In fact, my regular instruction is to ignore me entirely and just be in your own wee bubble! That means that while my camera is there it’s not in your face. I give you space, and I let your connection lead the way.

Candid Moments of Just Being You

Some of the most cherished photos come when you're not focused on the camera at all. As you walk hand in hand, laugh about something funny that happened during the vows, or just take in the view together, I’ll be there capturing those candid moments.

These images often end up being favourites because they’re authentic and full of personality. They tell the story of your relationship in a way that posed photos never could.

A Touch of Direction for Timeless Posed Shots

While candid shots are beautiful, I also carve out a little time for more traditional portraits with a little creative direction. Don’t worry, there’s nothing stiff or overly posed. I guide you gently into flattering, natural positions that show off how loved-up you are.

These are the shots that might end up framed on your wall or in an album for generations. I aim for elegance and ease, always making sure you feel comfortable and confident.

Chasing the Golden Hour

Rather than doing all your couple portraits in the afternoon, I often suggest splitting the time and saving a portion for the golden hour. This is the hour before sunset when the light turns soft, warm-toned, and romantic.

If you're up for it, we’ll sneak out for 10-15 minutes in the evening, usually during the turnaround between meal and first dance, or just after the first few dances have taken place. It’s quick, low-key, and absolutely worth it. The golden hour gives your portraits a dreamy, cinematic feel that’s hard to replicate at any other time of day. This is where proper magic can happen, if the weather plays along!

Final Thoughts

Every wedding is different, and so is every couple.

My approach to your portrait session is all about balancing beautiful imagery with a genuine, enjoyable experience. Ultimately though it’s led by you – we can spend more or less time on your couple photos depending on your priorities for your day.

If you want to go chasing the sunset I’m delighted to do it. If you want to prioritise candid images of you and your guests that’s great too. But whatever you decide, for the couple portrait section of your wedding I’ll never drag you away from your guests for hours of relentless posing. It’s about telling your love story honestly – with a little creativity, a lot of heart, and the best light I can find.

If you’re planning your wedding and have questions about your timeline or how to fit in portraits naturally, I’d love to chat so please get in touch!. This part of the day is special, and together, we’ll make it unforgettable.
