Have you ever wondered what a working day looks like for me, your friendly neighbourhood wedding photographer? Let me take you behind the scenes to a typical wedding day filled with laughter, love, and extraordinary memories.

My day usually begins with the delightful presence of my energetic 2-year-old, bouncing on our bed. With such an early wake-up call, I jump-start my day with an obligatory bucket of tea to give me the kickstart I need. Once fuelled up, it's time for final checks of my gear. I make sure my cameras are paired with go-to lenses, memory cards are formatted and ready to go, batteries are fully charged, and all the necessary lighting equipment is neatly packed.

At the agreed-upon time, I make my way to the day’s wedding, ready to capture every precious moment. If you've chosen morning preparations, I’ll arrive at your home or venue to document the magical transformation as makeup is expertly applied and the finery is donned. However, if you've opted for a different plan, I’ll await your arrival at the venue, eager to meet you and your friends and family.

Once the bride is ready, I'm right there to capture shots of her exiting the car or waiting with anticipation inside the venue. I’ll also head inside to discreetly capture the bride's walk down the aisle, accompanied by her loved one. Throughout the ceremony, I’ll move subtly around to capture heartfelt reactions up front and wide shots from the back. My goal is to be a quiet observer, allowing your wedding to be captured naturally, without undue attention on me.

After the ceremony, I’ll wait as you greet your guests and enjoy the joy of being newlyweds. This lets me to prepare for the group and couple photos that lie ahead. Once I'm all set up, we’ll move to your chosen location for the classic group shots, capturing memories with closest friends and family. Afterwards, I’ll take you for a leisurely stroll, capturing some relaxed portraits. I encourage you to simply be yourselves, as if I'm not even there, creating an oasis where you can chat and enjoy each other's company.

After the slightly more formal aspects of the day, it's time to let loose and have some fun! I’ll join you and your guests in celebrating, capturing genuine moments of pure happiness and connection. When the speeches commence, I’ll discreetly move between capturing the heartfelt words of the speakers and natural reactions of the head table and other guests.

While dinner is being served and enjoyed, I’ll take a brief intermission to download my photos and recharge my batteries (both literally and figuratively!). This wee break also provides you with a well-deserved respite from being in the spotlight, allowing you to simply enjoy the chatter and company of your family and guests.

As the evening progresses, we have the option to capture a few more romantic couple photos or focus on some shots as everyone starts to unwind, usually after indulging in a few drinks. I'll document your entrance onto the dancefloor and the excitement of other aspects of the evening’s entertainment. I’ll typically stay for a while during the dancing, as this is when people truly let their hair down, resulting in some lively images.

When I sense that you've had your fill of being in front of the camera or if I feel like I'm starting to repeat myself with my shots, I'll gently tap you on the shoulder and let you know that I'm about to pack up. But before saying goodnight, I always ask if there's anything else you'd like me to capture. If the answer is a resounding "no," I’ll tidy up my equipment, before making my way home, content with the photos I’ve taken for you.

But my day isn't over just yet! Once I arrive home, the first thing on my agenda is to carefully transfer all the raw images from the day onto my computer, making multiple backups to ensure their safety. Only when I'm confident that your images are securely stored in the right locations can I finally hit the hay, knowing that everything is organised as it should be.

A typical day as a wedding photographer is filled with excitement, energy, and countless heartfelt moments. The journey is intense and tiring, but it's also incredibly rewarding and invigorating! And remember, this glimpse into my daily routine barely scratches the surface of the meticulous editing process that follows - but that's a story for another day.

Until next time,
Peter
